On April 15, 1952, the YB-52 prototype took to the skies for the first time. While its sister aircraft, the XB-52, was supposed to fly, it was damaged during ground testing. Balls 8. With the tail The B-36 was the only aircraft designed to carry the T-12 “Cloudmaker,” a gravity bomb weighing 43,600 pounds and designed to produce an earthquake bomb effect. The B-36’s maximum payload was more than four times that of the World War II-developed B-29, and actually exceeded the payload of the B-52.
The B-52 (aka Stratofortress, aka Grey Lady, aka BUFF) has a minuscule rudder for an aircraft of its size and wing-mounted engine placement: Compare to, for instance, the rudder on a 747: The B-52’s rudder is so small that it can’t be used to decrab the aircraft during a crosswind landing, meaning that it had to be designed to stay crabbed
Since it entered service, the B-52 Stratofortress has been the backbone of the manned strategic bomber force for the US. The BUFF (Big Ugly Fat F****r as the B-52 is dubbed by its aircrews) is capable of dropping or launching the widest array of weapons in the US inventory. This includes gravity bombs, cluster bombs, precision guided missiles

The benefit is that you don't have to redesign the aircraft. Eight small fans fit the spec, four big ones don't. That's the start and end of it. You absolutely could build something with four high bypass turbofans that would perform better than the B-52, but it wouldn't be a B-52. It would be a new aircraft that borrowed on B-52 concepts.
